When thinking about the connection between people, the scent is an “invisible but visible mean” to help express language effectively. The use of fragrance has over a thousand years of history. The beginning of using scent is to serve the purpose of sacrifice as a way for people to communicate with their faith. Over the centuries of development, the scent has become an important aspect of human life. Not only expressing personality or a daily outfit, but it is also a great healing therapy.
During the social distancing period, enjoying a cocktail in the bar or simply breathing the fresh air in the woods has become a luxurious desire. Scent appears as “sedatives” helping us connect with ourselves, our memories, and our desires.
This September, the fragrance world welcomes unique creations from two famous niche perfumers: Kilian Paris and Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle.
“Good wine” from Kilian Paris: The art of scent and alcohol
Kilian Hennessy is the eighth heir to the family of Cognac Hennessy. Instead of continuing the family tradition, he turned to the art of scent, connecting the two worlds of perfume and alcohol with creations inspired by Rum, Gin, Cognac. Kilian Paris brings to the audience two scents: Apple Brandy on the Rocks and L’Heure Verte help you ease the nostalgia of jubilant evenings with friends.Â
Apple Brandy on the Rocks describes the luxury and magnificence of New York’s nightlife, the city known as the “Big Apple”. The scent is a glorious rebirth with the signature “on the rocks” – a combination of bergamot, pineapple, and cardamom – of the original version: Apple Brandy, New York. Crafted for the first time by Sidonie Lancesseur with advice from Kilian Hennessy, Apple Brandy on the Rocks is the scent that carries the soul of the “American cradle” – New York, now supplemented with the “on the rocks” makes the glass of wine become exciting and lively. “Taking” a sip of Apple Brandy on the Rocks, the senses are delighted to receive the cool “ice” of bergamot and cardamom. After the sense of smell has been “washed” by the first notes, the nectar gradually dominates, seductively mingling with vanilla and Rum, secretly “intoxicating” the recipient.
If Apple Brandy is energetic, aggressive in the American spirit, L’Heure Verte represents a dreamy Paris – where we drink and dream about art. L’Heure Verte in French refers to Happy hour – when it is dark, glasses of Absinthe stirred with a white sugar ball begin to be served. The liquid gradually turns green like the Paris fog or the swirls in Van Gogh’s paintings. Behind the smooth color of the wine is the essence of Absinthe: extreme stimulation. The scent not only shows the taste of wine but also the Parisian atmosphere of Happy hour. Absinthe’s herbal breath in L’Heure Verte glows with violet leaf and licorice root notes, making sense “drunk”. At this time, the wood is a base for the illusions derived from the steam of patchouli, sandalwood, and vetiver. L’Heure Verte promises to bring a beautiful, luxurious Paris where dreams blend into the rhythm of life.
Lost in the peaceful green forest with Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle. A unique combination of natural and man-made scent.
Synthetic Jungle is the latest creation coming this September from Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle. Inspired by the cult scent of the 1970s, Synthetic Jungle brings a picture of nature reproduced in a contemporary “paint” filled with green. Derived from the “green accord” – concealed in the Private Collection scent by Estée Lauder in 1973, the maker has retained the signature basil note, then blended with hyacinth, lily of the valley, and natural jasmine to a forest full of fragrant flowers drenched in morning dew. Then, under the background of the artificial compound styralyl acetate – a combination of gardenia, rhubarb, oak moss, nurtured a Synthetic Jungle that is more vivid and vibrant than ever.
The paradox here is to use artificial elements to reproduce a scent from nature. Frédéric Malle says: “Artificial compounds are an important piece of the puzzle in any scent. The world of scent became interesting thanks to the booming of chemistry. To bring the most realistic natural picture, the maker must add synthetic elements.” This is probably also a suitable explanation for the name Synthetic Jungle – a green, dreamy experience in a fancy, stylish forest.
Anne Flipo
Synthetic Jungle marks Anne Flipo’s debut when she joins Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle. Anne Flipo is known as the architect of nature and the genius interpreting memory. Childhood associated with forests and flower-filled valleys nurtured in her a magical love for nature and its influence on the life cycle.
In perfumery, Anne seeks to recreate her childhood in the North of France through her olfactory creations. The base notes of Synthetic Jungle are based on patchouli – one of the most nuanced ingredients, creating a bond between plants and people, allowing the scent to blend into the skin. She became the first woman to be honored by the IFF as a Master Perfumer with her talent. Anne has never hidden the fact that she is “obsessed” with the green palette and the smell of earth and flowers, which is the factor for Frédéric Malle to choose Synthetic Jungle – the representative “contemporary gift” for a unique combination of natural and man-made.
The scent can heal loneliness
We have gone through nearly 2 tumultuous years when everything gradually tends to be minimalist. The world of scent is constantly changing, expanding, and adapting to people’s desires: entertainment, go out and talk. Although the scent is not a direct “passport” to the roads, it is the key that opens the door of memories and emotions, helping you relax in your mind and discover yourself.
